Where To Place A Blog

A Blog can literally be built right on the website and become part of the website

A Blog can just be a "link" on your website to another blog website (i.e. WordPress)

A Blog can have a "feed" into your webstie to display your blog articles but the blog is still located on another blog website (i.e. WordPress)

Free Blogs

Has a domain name like www.mycompanyblog.blogspot.com

Not for business/professional use

Not used to generate leads/sales

Blog Built Into Website (WordPress Website)

Blog is just another "section" on the website

Keeps visitors on your website

Has no "independent personality"

Lacks the functionality and plugins that stand alone blogs provide (i.e. subscribe to posts by email, quick polls, automatic XML sitemap maintenence)

No independent Search Engine Optimization

Blog Separate from the Website (recommended)

WordPress will have its own domain name, database and hosting (separate from your main website)

WordPress authors can write blog posts, add comments and install or update plugins

SEO authority will be split on both sites

Independent Search Engine Optimization

Blog should be used to "drive" people to your website - this is not possible if the blog is "built into" your website

NOTE: Search Engines (like Googleâ„¢) will generally display any specific web page, no more than twice on the FIRST page of search results.   This is why you would want a blog separate from your website so that you have an "extra" third spot to get on the first page of the search results.  This is basically what the blog is used for in Search Engine Optimization.
